Hien Mai
Vu
During her time at MSD, Mai grew significantly through collective work and the community around her. Her works explore intersectional narratives, her Vietnamese-German identity, and interpersonal relationships. Inspired by her social environment, Mai consistently finds opportunities to discover and tell new, untold stories.
Mai-Asia-Imbiss
A collection of stories about labour, identity, and Vietnamese-East German history
What is your work about?
In this project, I explore my personal relationship with our imbiss and make space for my parents' stories, particularly my father's.
What specifically inspired or motivated you for this project?
My father rarely talks about the past, perhaps because he believes it holds less significance since it is unchangeable. Therefore, it was all the more fascinating to occasionally catch fragments of his stories. This project is a tribute to my parents and their daily hard work, which has made my studies possible in the first place.
What have you grown from in your process?
I have learned to formulate a concise narrative from an extensive story. There is simply too much to tell to adequately honor both the diversity and the shared experiences of the Vietnamese-German community.
How could the project continue?
I hope to create more visibility for marginalized perspectives through the project. Additionally, I want to translate it into Vietnamese to make it more accessible and to show my parents – this is what I do in my studies!
