The Bring Dad Back Plan
Picture book on child-friendly creative coping with parental separation
What is your project about?
Clara is in a bad mood because this Friday, for the first time, she and Juli have to go to the house where Dad now lives. Clara and Juli live there too, at least sometimes. My picture book tells the story of how the siblings cope with their parents’ separation and adjust to their father’s new home. The fact that the apartment doesn't have as many flaws as expected and that a random stray cat feels all too comfortable with them doesn’t fit into Clara's plan to bring Dad back.
Were there any specific challenges that you overcame?
The book has autobiographical elements but is primarily intended to tell an encouraging and light-hearted story from the everyday lives of children of separated parents, which is a reality for many. It was important to me that the two child characters find an empowering way to handle the situation – even if it means initially putting up a strong resistance.
