Nahra
Manshard
Nahra specializes in visual storytelling. Traditional techniques are combined with digital tools to take advantage of both. This blurs the boundaries between realism and the fantastical, allowing intimate stories to be told in an engaging way. The use of metaphors and symbols is also employed in other areas of design. The playful contrast between spontaneous and planned, elegant and punk influences Nahra's works.
Rooted
Comic about living in the Hambacher Forest
What is your work about?
It's about the occupation of the Hambach Forest. Back then, it wasn't just about defending this forest, but also about creating a space of freedom. Over five years later, many people are still accompanied by experiences they had back then. I want to know what made this space of freedom special. What did the freedom that was created back then look like? What was it made of? That's why I interviewed different people who lived there and let them tell me their stories. These stories are now featured in "Rooted".
Were there specific challenges that you overcame?
I am aware that this is not a classic documentary, but rather focuses on very subjective experiences. That is precisely why the comic is a suitable medium, as it does not mimic objectivity. Some stories even reach a fantastical level to truly reflect emotions, feelings, and thoughts. I hope to have made use of the possibilities of visual storytelling.
How could the project progress?
I want to turn the stories I still have into comic form and find more interviews to further investigate this space of freedom. Once I have enough material to have a complete picture, I want to approach publishers with it.
